Dandruff and the Causes Dandruff Also called SCURF and scientifically called Pityriasis capitis, it is the cause of excessive shedding of dead skin from the scalp. It is normal for the skin cells to shed due to flaking. A small amount of dead cells is normal and common. However, some people shed dead scalp skin in large amounts that accompanies redness and irritation of the scalp. Dandruff is just dead skin that accumulates on the scalp. It can also be treated with special shampoos. More often, dandruff is not likely to be the cause of hair loss.
Many people find dandruff as a cause of self-esteem and social problems. With this, treatment is important due to psychological reasons.
Dandruff causes and symptoms
Dandruff is the white flaky substance that falls from the head of a person and is caused by overgrowth of skin cells that makes up the scalp. Scientists suggest that the cause of dandruff may be the hypersensitive reaction to the production of Pityrosporum ovale yeast that occurs in the scalp. There are theories about dandruff, such as linking dandruff to a fungus. A new fungus called Malassezia that exists due to overabundance on the scalp in people suffering from dandruff has been identified.
As the epidermal layer dies and replenishes itself, cells are produced and pushed outward causing the dead cells to flake off the scalp. In most people, these flakes are too small and not visible enough to see. It would take a month before skin replacing is done. But, in some conditions, two to seven days, rapid replenishing of dead cells causes large flaking of dead skin in oily clumps which may appear white, or rather grayish patches visible in the scalp or on clothes.
Another cause of dandruff is known as an allergic reaction due to chemicals such as hair gels, sprays, oils and even sometimes dandruff medications known as Ketoconazole. There is no evidence convincing enough that food such as yeast and sugar, excessive perspiration, or even climate, causes any role in dandruff.
Diagnosis
Dandruff usually occurs in puberty just about the same time as acne. Appearance of white-grayish flakes on the hair, or on the shoulder, on the collar, or on the clothes can easily be spotted by naked eye. Dandruff occurs more often with a person who has oily hair.
Prevention
There have been many strategies for controlling dandruff. The most important is increasing shampooing which will remove visible dandruff flaking. Hair washing, reducing stress, eating healthy foods and increasing humidity inside the house are regular preventive measures. In addition, using hair products with chemical substances must be avoided. The use of excessive hair curlers, hair sprayers, gels, oils, and frequent hair coloring should not be done to prevent dandruff existence. These may produce scalp irritation and may even worsen the dandruff condition.
However, elimination of fungus may result dramatic improvement on your scalp. Regular use of shampoo or products with anti-fungal protection may treat and even prevent recurrence.
To treat dandruff properly, you must know the cause first, then follow up with the right treatment.
