What is microderm abrasion?

Microderm abrasion is a cosmetic procedure being popularly used by doctors, and in medical spas.  It is a procedure where the dead and outermost part of the skin (corneum) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. Microdermabrasion is a system, where mechanical abrasion is done. It allows a jet of inert, natural, mineral crystals of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, to be brushed onto the surface of the skin where it abrades dry, dead or

redundant cell tissue with little trauma. Particles and removed materials are then vacuumed off with the use of a hand piece that looks like a wand, giving a magical finish to the person who has long suffered from bad skin. However, before attaining the desired look one

has to visit the clinic many times for the procedure, at least depending on the severity of the case.

Microdermabrasion helps remove acne scars

Acne affects almost 100% of the youth between ages twelve and seventeen, - more than 40% of adolescents have severe cases which require medical attention. Acne does not discriminate between gender, both male and female genders are affected and it could actually start at the early age of ten. It usually lasts for five to ten years, varying with skin types, diet, hormones and how the problem is managed. Other adults suffer even beyond the age of thirty or forty. Unfortunately some of those way past their acne years do not escape

the ravages of the disorder. Scars are often left on the face and on other acne areas such as on the neck, chest, back, shoulders, scalp, and upper arms and legs.

Microdermabrasion cream can be effective in the treatment and removal of acne scars. However it is less effective on sunken scars. For acne treatment, repeated visit and periodical follow ups are important to achieve success.

This is how Microdermabrasion works.

1. The skin pores are cleansed so as to allow healing from the existing acne.

2. The dead skin cells are sucked out or removed. This will prevent pimples from appearing. Pimples are caused by dead skin cells that are plugged in the pores.

There are 4 Techniques in Microdermabrasion.

1. Peeling. Microdermabrasion makes use of the power of micro crystals to remove the debris from the skin. It does not cause pain but gives the feeling of having deep massage.

2. he use of Corundum Crystal Machines.  Microdermabrasion or Microderm as it is also popularly called makes use of corundum or aluminum oxide crystals. They are good for cutting and abrading, do not cause allergic skin reactions and do not interact chemically. The

crystals are not absorbed by the skin. It also has bactericidal property which is good for treating acne.

3. Other Crystals Used.

Other crystals instead of corundum include sodium chloride crystals, sodium bicarbonate crystals, and magnesium oxide crystals. These are cheaper but less hard and are therefore less abrasive than aluminum oxide.

4. The use of Crystal tipped devices.

Instead of using crystals a diamond tipped device is used to abrade skin. It is more hygienic than using crystals and procedure takes less time. It is less painful than the crystal procedure.

Patients who have taken the medication Accutane (Isotretinion) in the previous twelve months should not undergo Microdermabrasion.
